While contracted to help design a simple website for a client, I decided to do a deep dive into the world of web hosting and website building. The main drive of this project was to get a better feel for what makes up the backend of a website to improve my web troubleshooting skills.
I started by setting up a LAMP stack on a Ubuntu server. After the initial setup came the fun part of changing all the settings in that stack of services to prepare my site for launch. Of course there was also handling the domain management with my registrar to ensure proper DNS handling. Lastly, I added security certificates to make my site comply with common modern security standards.
Once I had the web server up and running, it was time to build my site! Leveraging the powerful tools of WordPress.org, I was able to put together this humble site you see before you. That being said, I’m a Systems Administrator, not a designer.
All-in-all I found this to be a very informative and truly fun project to dive into. I came away with a better understanding of the building blocks of websites and new perspectives on troubleshooting those blocks.
